Another citytrip this year to keep our heads going 😉 Düsseldorf in Germany is our next victim.
Just over two hours from Ghent by (high-speed) train, we arrived on a rainy Saturday morning in August. After dropping our luggage at the hotel, we walked to K20, a modern art museum. If you buy a combi-ticket (with our Thalys ticket we got a reduced entrance fee at €14 per person), a shuttle brings you to K21, the sister museum with more conceptual art (360 view). They both are worth the money, but cannot be compared to eachother. By the time we left the latter, the rain had stopped and we explored the old town by foot. The first day was quiet busy, and the next days won’t be calmer!
Day 2 and the sun is our compagnon de route! We start the day at the famous Kiefnerstrasse. The houses in this street almost all have arty façades. It’s beautiful and colourful, not to big though and the only streetart place we found. From there we take a tram/metro to the other side of town or rather the other side of the river Rhein. With this weather we enjoy the open space as much as we can! It’s almost dinner time when we get back to the cityside along one of the huge bridges. We get an icecream apero before real dinner 😉
The hotel has some nice bikes we can rent for free, upon availability and without previous booking. We are lucky and watch a beautiful sunset along the Rheinufferpromenade.
We got up a bit earlier than yesterday and have our bikes again! On our last day we explore Medienhafen. This area is the newer part of town, with modern and futuristic buildings, Frank Gehry as one of the architects says enough. With our bikes we can see much more than expected. We go along the harbour and ‘beaches’ of the Rhein river, and cross the bridge again to have another view from the Festweih over town. We have an ice cream and an early dinner before returning our bikes to the hotel and head to the train station.
Düsseldorf was a nice surprise, mainly because of the lovely weather, but is has some fancy sightseeings to keep you busy for a few days.
We slept at Me and All hotel, had dinners at Vapiano and Bob&Mary and ice cream at Giovanni L. More info you can find on the official toerism site of Düsseldorf.
