Open air concerts in Ghent. Yes indeed! Last weekend Ennio Morricone was visiting our town. He had chosen the most beautiful place to give an open air concert, St. Peter’s Square. With the basilica in the background and resounding acoustics thanks to the setting. Only the weather was disappointing. But hey, that’s the risk of open air concerts in Belgium …
The performance was incredible! Morricone composed hundreds of songs during his 60 year carreer. Mostly soundtracks, but he also wrote pop songs and classical music. Backend by the Belgian choir ‘Fine Fleur’ and the Czech National Orchestra, the maestro directed us along magnificent songs. The music of ‘The good, the bad and the ugly’, ‘Once upon a time in the West’, ‘Hateful Eight’ (Oscar-winning song!), ‘Sean, Sean’, ‘Maddalena’, … all came along. The voice of soprano Susanna Rigacci was impressing, and gave us goose bumps! ‘On Earth as it is in Heaven’ closed the concert and was just stunning. If you have a chance to go to one of the concerts in the ‘The 60 years of Music Tour’, you really should!
And if not: Ghent is starting to build a tradition in open air concerts 🙂 We had Prince, Leonard Cohen, … and we are expecting Massive Attack in August!
